Window Pricing by Frame

Double pane windows are available in five main window frame types that include vinyl, wood clad, fiberglass, compsite and aluminum. They are listed in their overall popularity in terms of the replacement window market, with vinyl accounting for just over 50% of all replacements in the United States. Find a basic description of each frame type, along with recommended manufacturers and a general price range.

Vinyl

Vinyl is the most popular material for replacement windows throughout the country. These frames are affordable, they work well and they are available in almost every window store around the country. Prices vary dramatically, with the high end products being superior and offering outstanding energy efficiency, while the cheaper and entry level windows are often questionable in terms of quality and efficiency. Middle range options are often the preferred choice when purchased from a well-known and reputable manufacturers with excellent installation. OKNA, Amerimax and Sunrise are the top choices when it comes to vinyl window frames.

Wood Clad

Wood clad windows are visually appealing and can add quite a lot of appeal to the inside and outside of a home. These windows generally use a vinyl, fiberglass or aluminum clad exterior with a real wood interior. Each manufacturer offers their own options in terms of the wood species and they are by far the most expensive replacement frame material on the market. In addition, they will require some maintenance over the years to protect the wood from the elements. Andersen and Kolbe are top choices for wood clad window frames.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is a popular window frame choice because they come in so many great finish and color options. In addition to this, these frames are durable and strong. They are slightly more expensive than vinyl, but there is some discussion on whether they are as energy efficient as some of the higher end vinyl options available on the market today. There is some evidence that points to fiberglass having the ability to retain their energy efficiency over time, where vinyl will lose that efficiency. There is a wide selection of window manufacturers offering fiberglass, made to a specific mix used only by that company. Marvin Infinity is one of the most preferred choices when it comes to fiberglass windows.

-- Price Range: $400 - $1,000 installed --

Composite

Each manufacturer uses different materials when making composite frames. In most instances these frames are made from vinyl mixed with wood products to create a strong and durable frame. The advantage to this type of frame is the choice of finish options and colors available. OKNA Starmark series and Andersen Fibrex are the popular window manufacturers for composite window frames.

-- Price Range: $250 - $700 installed --

Aluminum

Aluminum are less popular than some of the other options available such as wood clad or vinyl. This type of frame is used more often in commercial properties becauseof its considerable durability and strength. The windows you find in residential properties are aluminum clad and are thermally broken, which ensures improved energy efficiency. Aluminum frames are ideal for warmer climates where other frames would struggle with the hot temperatures. PGT and Milgard are the popular window companies when it comes to aluminum windows.
