Installation Guide To Double Pane Windows

Our installation guide to double pane windows can help you find the right installer for the job. This can certainly be a tricky part of the project, depending on whether you go with a local handyman, a local company, a contractor or a window manufacturer that only allows their installers to complete the work.

Installation Is Half The Battle

Getting a quality window is half the battle, having it properly installed is the other half. You want a company that pays their installers by the hour, as opposed to by the window. Subcontractors from places like Home Depot are often paid by the window, which incentives the installer to get it done quick and dirty. Instead, what you want is an installer who is paid a fair hourly wage and takes pride in their work. Of course, a contractor pays themselves, so it's not always so cut and dry whether they are going to cut corners or not.

Ask For The Step By Step

Ask the installer or contractor to explain step by step what they plan to do to install your replacement windows. (There are a number of different types of window installation and you should know what is required for your project.) Do this with each of the companies that comes out to give you a bid. You can even write down the step by step process and if one of the installers doesn't include one or more of the steps, point out that the other companies were including these steps in their bid price. By the time you get to your 3rd or 4th bid, you will have a very good idea of what installation steps are required for your specific project (and the per window price you should be paying).

Check Reviews

The company or contractor should have good online reviews. Companies with solid reviews will usually tell you about them, so always ask whether they have a Yelp listing, Google Local listing etc to learn from past customers about the quality of their work. Some companies may not have reviews, but they should have a list of referrals. Get two or three referrals from them and quickly call these homeowners up and ask about the quality of the work, as well as how the double pane windows have held up over time.

Go With Your Gut

After following the steps above, you should have narrowed your choice down to one or two top companies or installers. If at this point you simply can't decide, go with your gut. Believe it or not, your gut feeling is usually right. Besides, it's more of a tie breaker, not a first step by any means.
