Double paned windows are a huge improvements over older single paned windows and provide excellent energy efficiency and comfort for the home. Many manufacturers produce three models, an entry level, mid tier and high end window series. We will provide basic explanations of each, as well as a range of installed prices you can expect.
Entry Level WindowsEntry level or builder grade windows are affordable, but not the best windows on the market. They will provide worse energy efficiency numbers than higher quality windows, although they are often an acceptable option for rental properties etc. There are some decent options at the top of this price point that will provide good protection throughout the year. Most homeowners should opt for the middle range window price point to maximize their long term investment.
Mid Tier Models WindowsMid tier double pane windows are the most commonly purchased and provide lots of options for consumers. Vinyl and fiberglass tend to be the more popular window options because of their good performance numbers and low maintenance requirements. Consumers will often spend more on the installation portion of the project than if they buy en entry level window. This typically means a qualified and experienced contractor with an eye for detail and a high quality finish. From a value perspective, the mid range model typically provides the best long term value for your dollar.
High End WindowsHigh end double pane windows normally start in the $750 region and can go well over $1,000 per window. For instance, Andersen's Architectural Series (say a 32" by 48" double hung) can run $1,800 without installation. In general, premium double paned windows are usually a wood clad that uses a high quality aluminium, vinyl or fiberglass exterior. On the interior there is a beautiful wood species that adds some pretty nice visual appeal. Wood windows do require regular maintenance to keep them in good condition. Installation is often of the highest quality when choosing high end windows and therefore adds to the overall price tag.
